So, you have to celebrate your birthday in quarantine.
If you’re currently in one of the many states under stay-at-home orders, your social activities have been drastically limited. Even those in states without strict orders are still staying home and restraining from social gatherings. This is for the greater good, but unfortunately requires cancelling a lot of plans, including birthday celebrations.
This didn’t even occur to me until we had to cancel a family vacation at the end of April, during which we were going to celebrate my sister’s 20th birthday. Then, I realized that she will have to celebrate her birthday in quarantine. So, I started brainstorming ways to celebrate at home during this very strange time.
These ideas work best if you’re living with family or friends during this time, but some of the ideas could be altered for a group video call party as well. So, keep reading to get ideas on how to celebrate a birthday in quarantine!

A karaoke party is always a guaranteed good time. It’s engaging, fun for everyone, and usually hilarious! Karaoke machines can be a bit on the pricier side, if you don’t already have one. However, you can just order a bluetooth karaoke microphone! They have a built in speaker and are significantly cheaper than a full karaoke machine. I like to connect a computer to the tv and use karaoke youtube videos for the lyrics. If you don’t want to get a microphone, you don’t have to! You can totally karaoke without one, just use a hairbrush and sing at the top of your lungs!
Make this more festive by getting fun snacks and even dressing up if you want! This could also be done over a group video call, and it would still be equally as fun and hilarious!
If you’re used to going out for your birthday, why not bring the club back home? I’ve already seen videos of this online and think it’s a great idea! Make your own DIY nightclub by decorating a room (or whole house, or garage, or basement!) with colored lights. Set up your own bar and blast your favorite music! Find a playlist on Spotify, or find a radio station with a DJ playing a club mix (they usually only do this at night, but I’m assuming that’s when you’d be celebrating anyways)!
It may not be quite the same as going out with your friends, but I think it would still be a lot of fun. You could even ‘go out for dinner first’ by making a fancy meal and serving it in a different room. Get creative and involve everyone in the household to make setting up even more fun. Don’t forget to dress up as well!
If you’re home alone during this time, plan festive birthday meals! For breakfast, make a cute breakfast bar with your favorite food. I’d recommend something fun like pancakes or crepes. If some restaurants in your area are still delivering or selling food to go, get something from your favorite restaurants for lunch and dinner! Open a bottle of wine and just celebrate that you’ve made it through another year!
Of course, you have to make some sort of birthday dessert, whether it’s a fancy cake or whatever chocolate you have in the pantry, be sure to eat something sweet. Be sure to make time to call family or friends to catch up and to have someone to celebrate with. You can set up a group video call so everyone can sing Happy Birthday to you!
This one is for those who would rather stay in than go out for their birthday anyways! A movie marathon is a classic way to have fun at home. Turn your living room into a movie theater by arranging your chairs and couches around the tv. Make the area cozy by getting out your comfiest blankets and pillows, or by building a little fort. Then, put up string lights and get some snacks and you’re good to go!
Backyard Beach Party
This is honestly the perfect way to celebrate a birthday with your family if you’re lucky enough to have a pool in your backyard. If, like me, you don’t, you will just have to pretend! Or, get a small inflatable pool just for laughs. Set up a table outside with beach snacks, pina coladas, and a cooler with all of your other favorite beachy drinks. Order some blow up beach balls to toss around the yard, and use a bluetooth speaker to play fun, summertime music.
If you do happen to have a pool, get some fun inflatable pool floats and water games. Collect beach games as well, like frisbee and volleyball. For the full effect, set up beach chairs, a patio umbrella or canopy, and towels for sitting or laying on. Of course, the whole family has to wear swimsuits to fully commit to this theme.
Pick a decade and run with it! Personally, I think it would be best to choose the decade you were born in. Coordinate with your friends to set up a group video call on Zoom (or another platform of your choice) to really make it a party. Play the popular music and have everyone dress up in the popular styles of that time.
Home Music Festival
If, like me, you’ve had summer festival plans cancelled or postponed, you could set up your own music festival! Or, it honestly might be too sad, it’s up to you. Set this up inside your house or in your backyard! Find out when your favorite artists are live-streaming that day and make a schedule. Make a playlist of your favorite music to listen and dance to in-between livestreams.
Recreate your favorite festival foods and drinks, and dress like your going to a festival! If you have them, you could also set up a hammock, string lights, and any other festival essentials you can think of! Just try not to think about how you should’ve been seeing these artists live, there’s always next summer!
This theme is a great one if you’re looking for something a little more chill, with less set up required. Pick a foreign country, and that’s your theme! Make the popular food and drinks from that region, and play music from there as well. I think Switzerland would be a great choice, because fondue. You could also do Italy and make your own pasta, which actually isn’t that hard!
This could be a fun way to get the whole family involved with helping prepare appetizers, dinner, and dessert. Plus, like several of the other ideas, you could always finish the night off with a movie that fits the theme.
This one is pretty self-explanatory. Get out all those card and board games stored in the game closet and play them! Of course, make it more festive by decorating the room, making special food, getting unhealthy snacks, and making fun drinks. Raise the stakes by offering prizes for the game winners or funny dares for the game losers. If you want to get really creative, make your own board game! While you’re playing, put on your favorite music and just have fun!
So, hopefully you find something on this list that will make having to celebrate your birthday in quarantine a little less disappointing. Even if you don’t want to celebrate with friends or family over a group video call, be sure to check in with them anyways. There’s nothing more comforting than spending time talking to loved ones during times like this. If you’re really not interested in setting up a big celebration right now, you can always just celebrate when everything is back to normal!
