When you’re starting a blog, one of the first things you think about is what it’s name is going to be, right? However, it can be difficult to know how to choose a blog name that is perfect for you when you’re just starting out.
You want the name to be creative, catchy, and unique, but also simple, easy to remember, and not embarrassing to tell people!
It can feel very overwhelming to meet all of this criteria, but it doesn’t have to be! There’s a simple formula you can follow to create a name that is perfect for your blog, and that you will love.
Follow this step-by-step guide and I guarantee it will lead you to discovering the blog name of your dreams! I even included a printable worksheet for you to use and keep track of your ideas, so be sure to print that once you’ve finished reading this post!
Okay, let’s get into it!
- Don’t Get Stuck
This is an important one to start off with! When you’re starting a blog, it’s easy to feel nervous and get stuck in the planning and branding phase. You want everything to perfect, which I totally understand!
However, it’s just not realistic to expect yourself to be perfect before you’ve even had any blogging experience. The best advice I can give you is to just start! Go with your gut, and you can always adjust your branding and blog name later on if you want.
I wasted years dreaming about starting a blog. I tried multiple times, but never actually got to the launching part. I would spend months planning, get frustrated with my inability to make everything perfect, and then I’d quit!
Avoid this trap please. It should only take a few days to pick a blog name, maybe a week! After a week is up, just pick a name and get started!
- Know Your Niche
Knowing your niche(s), or main topics, that your blog will be focusing on is a great starting place for knowing how to choose the perfect blog name. You want to make sure your blog name makes sense with your niche. For example, I have a lifestyle blog, so I wanted a name that didn’t restrict me to one topic, and that had a personal touch. I wear blue jeans a lot and I have brown hair, hence Blue Jean Brunette.
If I had named my blog something like Traveling Brunette, you would immediately assume my blog was only focused on traveling. However, this would be a good thing if your blog was focusing on travel. You want your title to give the reader an idea of what your blog is about.
Knowing that I wanted to be able to focus on different topics that are important to me helped me narrow down what kind of blog name I wanted. Use the worksheet to write down what your blog niche(s) are.
Now we have gotten to the fun part! It’s time to brainstorm words and phrases that relate to you or your blog niche. When you’re feeling creative, sit down and get writing! Write down anything that comes to mind, wether it be common phrases relating to your niche, song lyrics, words you like, movie quotes, etc.
You may need more room for this than the worksheet allows for, so use another paper, and when your satisfied, go through them and add your favorite ones to the worksheet.
- Time to Combine
Now, take all the words and phrases you wrote down and start combining them!
You can combine your words and phrases randomly and will likely come up with something amazing! If you want extra direction, I threw in a few more tips for how to create a great sounding blog name (with real life examples from successful blogs!) with the worksheet. You can get that sent right to your inbox here!
Remember that you want the name to flow and be catchy, so it’s easy to say and easy to remember.
You also what to indicate your niche with the name, so your target audience will see your name and click on it, knowing that based on the name, your blog will likely have the information they’re looking for.
Have fun with it, and narrow it down to 5-10 favorites!
- Test Drive It
Once you have narrowed all your ideas down to you top favorites, it’s time to test them out. Ask your friends and family what they think of it!
Type out how it would look as a domain name, and make sure there is no way the words could be mistaken, or be read differently than you intended. There are a lot of examples of this online, but here is a mild example. An information technology website was named IT Scrap, and it’s domain was itscrap-com, which could easily be mistaken for It’s Crap, which is… not ideal.
Make sure you don’t feel silly saying it out loud, and that it can be taken seriously by visitors and brands. This basically means it’s not vulgar, promoting inappropriate behaviors, or has a negative tone.
Remember, your opinion is the one that matters the most! If you love a name that your friend thinks is tacky, consider their opinion, but go ahead with it if you still think it’s the right name for your blog!
Now, choose your favorite name, then sleep on it.
- Get Your Domain
It’s the day after you chose your favorite name. You wake up, and you still love it! YAY! Now, it’s time to buy your domain before it gets snatched up!
I purchased my domain on Namecheap. I would recommend it! You can also purchase a domain through most hosting platforms, but I wan’t ready to purchase hosting yet when I decided on my name, so I chose to buy it separately.

If you’ve followed all the steps, you now have an amazing blog name that you totally love! Or, maybe you have a great blog name that you really like. Or, maybe you have a blog name that you’re still not sure about.
Whichever it is, your next step is still the same. START YOUR BLOG! Yes, go do it! Even if you’re not sure about your name, pick your favorite and go with it!
Remember tip number one, don’t get stuck here! I believe in you!
What name did you end up with, or how did you come up with your current blog name?
